VIRLEY, St Mary the Virgin
Admin History:
Salcott or Salcott Wigborough was originally a hamlet of Great Wigborough. A chapel-of-ease was built at Salcott and was served by the rector of Great Wigborough. In 1879, however, Salcott was united with the parish of Virley by Order-in-Council, forming the new parish of Salcott Virley.
The parish church of St Mary the Virgin, Virley held its last service on 28 September 1879 when the condition was described as dangerous in the Salcott baptism register (D/P 413/1/1). Virley church having been declared unsafe, the roof was removed, and services for the parish of Salcott Virley thereafter took place in the church at Salcott. The ruins of Virley church stand in the grounds of the Old Rectory.
