At front: note that 'The first St. John's Church, North Woolwich, was consecrated by the Bishop of Rochester on 26th September, 1872 and was the original mission of Uppingham School. It was destroyed by fire in the Blitz of 7th September, 1940. All that remained of church property was the old Infants School Hall and this was used as the church until 28th October, 1968 when the present church was consecrated by the Bishop of Chelmsford, The Right Reverend J.G. Tiarks'.
