Scope and Content:
Volume containing 38 maps and plans, all 21 x 29 inches.
Scale of 10 inches to 1 mile; map of woodlands 5 inches to 1 mile, plans of buildings 1 inch to 20 feet.
2,718 acres in centre, east, north-west and south-west of Gosfield and south of Sible Hedingham, with small areas in north of Bocking and east of Wethersfield.
Contents: Mansion house (56a.), Gosfield Park Farm (352a.), Orange Hall Farm (331a.), Clay Hall Farm (118a.), Liston Hall Farm (253a.), Park Hall Farm (313a.), Harmas Farm (254a.), Highgates Farm (128a.), Shardlowes Farm (137a.), woods (358a.), plantations (73a.) and other lands (73a.).
On page opposite each map is table giving names of farm, fields and tenant. State of cultivation (also distinguished by colour) and observations on nature of soil, drainage, suitability for crops of each field, and rents. Shows layout of grounds at Gosfield Hall and parish boundaries. Ground and first floor and attic plans of Gosfield Hall and ground-floor plans of every farm house and cottage with outbuildings on the estate, including potash manufactories at Bounces and Park Hall Farms and hop-kiln at Park Hall Farm. Opposite each plan is table giving name or purpose of each room (including upstair rooms not on plans), with notes on materials of construction, state of repair and whether old or new.
At end of volume: quit-rental and valuation of manorial rights of manors of Gosfield, Bell House, Hodings, Park Hall and Shardlowes; summary table.
Standard of draughtsmanship and surveying is of high order.
