Scope and Content:
Copy (contemporary) of the Probate of the Will of John Petre of Margaretting, esq. (s. of William Lord Petre) [made 1668; proved 1670]. Devises rectory of Margaretting, capital messuage, site and glebe lands of the rectory and manor of Margaretting, tenements called Rolfes and Lavers, 'the Mannor belonging or appertayninge to the Rectory', messuage called Howells alias Sweetings and lands in Margaretting and Ingatestone to w. Elizabeth for life, successive remainders to nephew Walter (s. of Thomas Petre late of Hapley, co. Staffs., esq.) and his heirs male, to nephew Edward Petre (only s. and h. of George Petre, decd.) and his heirs male, to godson John Petre, junior (younger s. and h.app. of John Petre, sen., of Fithlers, esq.) and his heirs male, and to the right heirs of testator. Devises manors of Shepreth and Meldreth (co- Cambs.) to w. Elizabeth for life, successive remainders to the said Edw. Petre, Walter Petre, John Petre and their respective heirs male, and to the right heirs of testator. Bequeaths £3,000 (part of £4,000 arrears of an annuity of £300 settled upon testator by his f. William late Lord Petre) to nephew William Lord Petre, in the hope that he will pay the maining £1,000 to testator's w. Bequests of plate and jewellery to relatives and friends and of money to the poor of Margaretting and Ingatestone, Shepreth and Meldreth. Residue to w. Eliz., whom he constitutes sole exocx., with Wm. Brent, esq., overseer]
