HIGH ONGAR, St Mary the Virgin
Admin History:
The benefice of High Ongar was united with the benefice of Norton Mandeville in 1955. The two civil parishes of High Ongar and Norton Mandeville were united by the County of Essex (Parish of High Ongar) Order 1968, and the two ecclesiastical parishes were united c.1988. The former parish churches of St Mary the Virgin, High Ongar, and All Saints, Norton Mandeville, remained as parish churches within the united parish. For records of the former parish of Norton Mandeville, and for any records of the united parish relating specifically to Norton Mandeville, see D/P 267.
The chapel-of-ease of St James, Marden Ash (in the former parish of High Ongar) was opened in 1883 and destroyed by enemy action in 1945. Services were held for a time in the Drill Hall, Marden Ash, and then in 'a small brick building in the rear' (D/P 68/6/10). The church was rebuilt on its original site in 1958.
Paslow (Wood) Common mission church, in the former parish of High Ongar, existed by 1888 (D/P 68/8/3). Meeting in a building which until 1895 was a church school, it still survived in 1956 (Victoria County History of Essex, volume 4 (1956), page 185). In about 1957 Paslow Common was transferred to the ecclesiastical parish of Blackmore, for records of which see D/P 266. The church closed c.1967.
