The Parliamentary Constituencies (England) Order 1970 (SI 1970/1694) - made under the provisions of House of Commons (Redistribution of Seats) Acts 1948 and 1959 - came into force on 25 November 1970. It created a new county constituency of Braintree, comprising the urban districts of Braintree and Bocking and Witham; the rural district of Braintree; and, from the rural district of Chelmsford, the parishes of Boreham, Broomfield, Chignall, Good Easter, Great Leighs, Great Waltham, Little Leighs, Little Waltham, Mashbury, Pleshey, Roxwell, Springfield and Writtle.

This register was in force from 16 February 1972 to 15 February 1973 (qualifying date 10 October 1971).
