HADLEIGH, St James the Less
Admin History:
Hadleigh parish church dates from the 12th century. The site of the church and surrounding properties was formed into a traffic island in 1923 by the construction to the north of the Hadleigh Bypass (A13). Following war damage, the restored church was formally re-opened in 1949. In 1968 a new organ and console gallery were erected at the western end of the church. The churchyard was closed by Order-in-Council of 25 May 1971, with the exception of burials in existing vaults and family graves. It also remained open for the interment of ashes.
The former Church of England School in London Road, Hadleigh, closed in 1924 and was used as a church hall, the freehold being acquired by the parish in 1955. The hall was sold in 2000.
The former mission of St Barnabas, Hadleigh, became a separate parish in 1958.
