LANGLEY BAPTIST CHURCH
Scope and Content:
In 1826, a number of Langley inhabitants started to meet in a carpenter's shop belonging to Nathan Driver. The services of Mr. Webb of Hadleigh, Suffolk, as minister, were secured for twelve months. In the spring of 1827, services were transferred to a barn at Duddenhoe Grange after the congregation grew too large for the carpenter's shop. At length, the members purchased 20 perches of land on the Upper Green to build a chapel. Some Langley people who had formerly attended Clavering Congregational Church joined the Baptist congregation. In 1831, the congregation was reckoned at 350, although this included people from outside Langley. A Sabbath School is mentioned in the Church Book in 1848. The chapel was rebuilt in 1892.
