RECORDS OF SERVICE OF ARTHUR GABBITAS OF LEYTON IN SECOND WORLD WAR
Scope and Content:
The Auxiliary Units were a secret force of civilians enrolled in 1940, nominally as part of - although operationally separate from - the Home Guard. Intended to undertake sabotage behind enemy lines in the event of an invasion, they were disbanded in November 1944.

Arthur W. A. Gabbitas, then of Leyton, served in the Auxiliary Units Signals, established in 1941, whose members were regular soldiers drawn from the Royal Corps of Signals but controlled directly by General Headquarters Home Forces. For a short interview with Mr. Gabbitas, recorded in 1995, see SA 1320.
