Admin History:
Puckle's Charity, established under the will of John Puckle, 1617, provided for the employment of a schoolteacher at Laindon. The charity was reformed in 1831, and shortly afterwards the school was being held 'in a room adjoining the church' (Reports of the Commissioners appointed ... to enquire concerning charities ... relating to the county of Essex, 1819-1837, pages 469-471 (manuscript pagination), which is available on microfiche in the Essex Record Office Library). The school appears on this site on the first edition Ordnance Survey 1:2500 map (Essex sheet 68.15), surveyed in 1874.

In December 1873 a school board was formed for Laindon, Basildon and Lee Chapel, and in 1877 the Board built the present school at what is now (2004) the junction of Church Hill and Basildon Road, Laindon. The school at the church closed shortly afterwards. By 1882 Puckle's Charity operated under a new scheme, which included the distribution of gifts to children attending the Board School. [Information in this paragraph from Kelly's Directories of Essex, 1878, 1882, 1886.]

In 1902, on its transfer from the School Board to Essex County Council, Laindon Board School became known as Laindon Council School.

The school attracted children from a number of parishes other than Laindon and Basildon, and by the early 20th century suffered from over-crowding. The small classroom used for the infants was extended in 1906. In 1910, 13 children (apparently from Little Burstead) were transferred to a new school erected at Langdon Hills, and in 1913 it was decided that children from the Barstable Hall estate in Basildon should also go to the Langdon Hills school. New classrooms were built in 1922, 1929, and 1936; from 1926 to 1933 St Nicholas's church hall was also used as an auxiliary classroom (as it was again from 1955 into the 1960s). In 1928 about 70 children were transferred to the new High Road Council School, Laindon, and in 1931 children over the age of 11 followed, leaving only infants and junior-age children at Laindon Council School. In 1933 a further 50 children were transferred to the new Markhams Chase Council School, Laindon, but 54 came to Laindon Council School from the High Road Council School. A school canteen was opened in 1941, but in 1956 was replaced by a new canteen-cum-hall, with an adjoining kitchen and classroom. In 1966 the school took over the former schoolteacher's house as additional accommodation.

By 1934 Laindon Council School became known as St Nicholas Lane Council School, by 1952 as St Nicholas Lane County Primary School, and from 1957 as Laindon Park County Primary School. It still existed - as Laindon Park Primary School - in 2004.

The three Laindon schools which existed by 1933 (Laindon Council School, High Road Council School, and Markhams Chase Council School) all came under one body of managers. By 1941 at the latest this body also ran the school at Langdon Hills and from 1949 the school at Dunton. By 1944 it was known as Laindon Council Grouped Schools, and from 1958 or earlier until 1964 (but now lacking the former High Road School) as Group No. 2 Primary Schools, Basildon. From 1965 until 1975 Group No. 2 Primary Schools comprised Dunton County Primary School, Millhouse County Infants' and Junior Schools, Laindon, and Laindon Park County Primary School. From 1975 Laindon Park County Primary School had a separate managing body.

The school's headteachers have been Mrs Harvey, 1877-1879; Miss Edith Rose Pepper, 1879-1884; Miss Alice Ellen Deeks, 1884-1889; Edward Kinnaird, 1889-1891; Charles Marks Hoare, 1891-1892; Anthony Stevens, 1892-1894; Louisa Hayward, 1895-1901; Mrs Louisa E.A.
