Admin History:
Richard Knight Causton was born in Deptford, Kent. Richard Causton was a Liberal, and he first stood unsuccessfully for Parliament in 1874 in Colchester. At his second attempt in 1880 he was elected (at the time Colchester returned two MPs). In 1885 Colchester had one MP and Causton lost by 166 votes, and then again by slightly more votes in 1886. He was re-elected MP in a by-election for West Southwark in 1888. He retained his seat at subsequent elections until 1910. During this time he served as a party whip, paymaster general after 1905 and a Privy Councillor after 1906. In 1910 following his electoral defeat he was created Baron Southwark. He died in 1929.
