Correspondence etc. of Arthur Henry Brown of Brentwood
Admin History:
Arthur H. Brown was born and baptized in 1830 at Brentwood, the son of Stephen W. Brown, grocer, and his wife Eliza. He appears in the 1851 census as a professor of music, living with his father - now a stationer - and family in Brentwood High Street (National Archives HO 107/1774, folio 147).
According to Maurice Frost's Historical Companion to Hymns Ancient and Modern Brown was organist at Brentwood 1842-1853; then at Romford for five years; and then again at Brentwood, dying there in 1926. Brown was also organist and music master at Brentwood School.
For further details see K. Langford, 'Arthur Henry Brown - a biographical sketch' in Essex Journal 34, number 1 (1999), cover and pp. 5-6.
Related Unit of Description:
A collection of Brown's brass-rubbings, formerly in the library of the Essex Society for Archaeology and History (see Essex Archaeology and History 11 (1979), pp. 119-123)) was deposited in the Essex Record Office in 1994 (Acc. A9163, part).
