MICROFILM OF RECORDS OF LAWFORD CHURCH OF ENGLAND (AIDED) PRIMARY SCHOOL
Admin History:
Charitable provision for the education of poor children of the parish began in 1723 with a bequest by John Leach of a farm and land in Wignall Street to provide schooling for 10 poor children. By 1816 a Sunday School operated in Lawford. In 1848 Lawford Church School was built on a site at the top of Church Hill and in 1866 Lawford Street School for infants was erected on a site near the Manningtree border by Mrs Cox of Lawford Place. A new National School was built in 1873 on land in Wignall Street. It opened in 1874 and was in use for nearly a century. Lawford Street School was closed and sold in 1903. A large room for infants was added to the Wignall Street building in 1937. A new school was built on a site in Long Road in 1969 at which time the school's status changed from Voluntary Controlled to Voluntary Aided.
