On 21 May 1523 Parliament granted an annual subsidy or tax for four years. It was to be assessed betwen 29 September and 11 November and paid by 9 February 1523/24. Henry VIII demanded that wealthier taxpayers made loans or anticipations of the first payment by 11 November 1523. The lists for the first payment are usually annotated to show that this payment has already been made. For the first two years land was assessed at 12d in the £, moveable goods at 12d in the £ for those with over £20 of goods, and 6d in the £ for those with goods between £2 and £20. Wages over 20s. per year were charged at 4d and aliens paid double. In the third year land and goods over £50 were both taxed at 12d in th £ [information from John Causton of Colchester May 2009]
