Monumental inscriptions in the church, churchyard and new burial ground (opened c.1935), recorded 1977-1978 [revised and re-indexed with a view to publication on microfiche, but includes no information beyond that in T/Z 151/6/1].
Includes index of names; index of occupations; index of places in and out of Essex and public bodies; plans of the church, churchyard and burial ground.
Monuments in churchyard include Commonwealth War Graves Commission headstone to Private P.E. Coppen, Essex Regiment, died 1915; also Richard Francis, bandmaster of 1st Royal Berkshire Regiment, died 1934; Frederick French, chorister, died aged 12, 1884; John Edwards Parker, Master Mariner, died 1917; Lieutenant General Sir John Fordyce, Colonel Commanding 16th Brigade Royal Artillery, died 1877; Cecil Ellis, killed in action in France, 1916; Flying Officer Ivan Kenneth Crawford, killed in flying accident, 1948; Bernie Culf, killed in action, 1916 and buried in France and Flight Sergeant Bernard Frederick Culf, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve Coastal Command, missing on active service, 1942; Abraham Plastow, servant and gamekeeper to families of Thomas Fowell Buxton and Osgood Gee, died 1836 ('Of humble station, yet of sterling worth; Awaiting Heaven, yet content on Earth; Quaint, honest, simple-hearted, kind, sincere Such was the man, to all our village dear! ... Monuments in church include Revd Theophilus Henry Blackall, former vicar, who died at sea between Melbourne and Colombo, 1903; Lieutenant Hugh Sidney Marsden, 1st Battalion King's Royal Rifles, killed in action near Ladysmith, Natal, South Africa 'while helping a wounded brother officer under heavy fire', 1899; tomb of Roger Harlakenden, died 1603, depicting Harlakenden and four wives; memorial to members of Wale family of Colne Priory, 1729-1770; Revd Thomas Carwardine, vicar, died 1824, his wife Anne, heiress of Wale family and descendant of Harlakendens, died 1817, and three sons, including Robert Wale Carwardine, Lieutenant in Honourable East India Company's Service, who died in Madras, India, 1814; John Wale Probert, Lieutenant Royal Navy, died on active service in Sierra Leone, 1847; John Eldred, died 1646, with inscription (in Latin) 'he first engaged in, and indeed worked hard at, foreign trade. Then, having become acquainted with his family property in Colchester, he established his house there, where he occupied himself in the highest offices in the town'; Frederick Ernest Bell, killed in action with the Essex Yeomanry at Ypres, 1915; George Cressener, died 1722; John Eldred of Olovers, Stanway, died 1717, 'who for his extensive knowledge in the law, his steady attachment to religion virtue and a zealous opposition to popery and arbitrary government having a voice in the Convention Parliament'.
Also in church are window erected to commemorate Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria 1897; board listing vicars; memorial to repair of Harlakenden monument by descendant Mary Androws of Leyton, 1729, at which time 'the inscription made perfect (from the books of the Heralds Office [College of Arms] wherein the inscription was entered at a visitation before it had suffered any decay)'; war memorials for parish and Earls Colne Grammar School relating to First and Second World Wars.
