The Chelmsford Methodist Circuit can trace its origins back to five separate circuits:- (i) Chelmsford (from 1870 Chelmsford and Maldon) Wesleyan Methodist Circuit (ii) Chelmsford Primitive Methodist Circuit (iii) Halstead and Sudbury Primitive Methodist Circuit (iv) Braintree Primitive Methodist Circuit (v) Maldon Primitive Methodist Circuit
(i) The Chelmsford and Maldon Wesleyan Methodist Circuit was divided into the Chelmsford Wesleyan Methodist Circuit and the Maldon Wesleyan Methodist Circuit, 1885-1901, these reunited as the Chelmsford Wesleyan Methodist Circuit 1901-1932 and then as the Chelmsford ex-Wesleyan Methodist Circuit 1932-1937.
(ii) The Chelmsford Primitive Methodist Circuit became the Chelmsford and Braintree Primitive Methodist Circuit following union with the Braintree Primitive Methodist Circuit (see section iii) in 1926, this then became the Chelmsford and Braintree ex- Primitive Methodist Circuit 1932-1937.
(iii)The Halstead and Sudbury Primitive Methodist Circuit became the Halstead Primitive Methodist Circuit in 1881 and in 1895 joined with the Braintree Primitive Methodist Circuit (see section iv) to become the Braintree and Halstead Primitive Methodist Circuit 1895-1898. Between 1898 and 1901 this was divided again between the Halstead Primitive Methodist Circuit and the Great Bardfield and Braintree Primitive Methodist Circuit. In 1901 these two circuits were again reunited to form the Halstead and Great Bardfield Primitive Methodist Circuit, renamed the Braintree Primitive Methodist Circuit in 1918. In 1926 the Braintree Circuit was united with the Chelmsford Primitive Methodist Circuit (see section ii) to form the Chelmsford and Braintree Primitive Methodist Circuit and from 1932 the Chelmsford and Braintree ex-Primitive Methodist Circuit.
(iv) The Braintree Primitive Methodist Circuit was united in 1895 with the Halstead Primitive Methodist Circuit to form the Braintree and Halstead Primitive Methodist Circuit. For subsequent history see section iii.
(v)The Maldon Primitive Methodist Circuit became in 1932 the Maldon ex-Primitive Methodist Circuit.
In 1937 the Chelmsford ex-Wesleyan Methodist Circuit and the Chelmsford and Braintree ex-Primitive Methodist Circuit united to form the Chelmsford Methodist Circuit. In 1946 the Maldon ex- Primitive Methodist Circuit was joined and the circuit was then divided into the Chelmsford Methodist Circuit and the Maldon Methodist Circuit. These were reunited as the Chelmsford Methodist Circuit in 1970.
