Monumental inscriptions in the church and churchyard of St. Nicolas, Witham, recorded in several stages 1977-1989.

Monuments in church include commemoration of re-opening of church 1819 with extra sittings, aided by Essex Church & Chapel Building Society; memorial to vicar Revd. Joseph Jefferson, Archdeacon of Colchester (died 1821), with epitaph ascribing to him 'yonder school, for village youth designed' and 'yon hospital dispensing rest to the diseas'd, and maim'd, and halt, and blind'; memorials to members of East family of Hall Place, Hurley, Berkshire; memorial to Mary Nevill later Smith later Harvey of Cressing Temple [Cressing] (died 1593); list of vicars; memorial to vicar Revd. Jonas Warly, Archdeacon of Colchester (died 1722), credited with recovering £181 per year for four almspeople; plaque recording gift by Dame Catherine Barnardiston 1626 of property to maintain preacher; plaques recording foundation of Bridge Street almshouses 1687, of Chipping Hill almshouses by Thomas Green esq. 1491, and of Blunts Hall Lane almshouse by George Armond gent. 1627; memorial window erected by George Gilbert Scott architect to clerk of works Henry Green Mortimer, killed in fall from church in Hamburg 1849; plaque recording foundation of bread charity by Dame Catherine Barnardiston 1633; plaque recording endowment by vicar Revd.
