BECONTREE DIVISION
Admin History:
According to Kelly's Directories of Essex, 1878-1926, the Becontree Petty Sessional Division comprised the following parishes: Barking, Chigwell (part), Dagenham, East Ham, Great Ilford, Leyton, Little Ilford, Walthamstow, Wanstead, West Ham and Woodford. The short-lived civil parish of Cann Hall was also part of this division. West Ham and East Ham ceased to be part of the Becontree Division when separate commissions of the peace were granted in 1887 (West Ham) and 1906 (East Ham).
On 1 April 1965 a separate commission of the peace for North-East London was created under the Administration of Justice Act 1964. This comprised the London Boroughs of Barking, Havering, Newham, Redbridge and Waltham Forest. Under this jurisdiction the Becontree Division continued to include those areas that it had covered before (Barking, Redbridge and Waltham Forest).
On 4 October 1977 the Becontree Division was replaced by separate divisions for each of the London Boroughs of Barking and Dagenham, Redbridge (see P/Re) and Waltham Forest.
