Scope and Content:
Radio programme items created by Dennis Rookard probably for the British Forces Broadcasting Service, 1987:
1) "Dickens and Rochester" - a report on the historical connections between Rochester in Kent and the author Charles Dickens. Including an interview with Michael Moad of Guildhall Museum about the audio-visual exhibition at the Charles Dickens Centre and about references in the works of Dickens to locations in Rochester. Also includes an interview with Dena Rockford of the Medway Tourist Centre about the attractions of Rochester, Chatham and Strood. Recorded 11 June 1987 (5 minutes 13 seconds).
2) "Brentwood Nature Trail" - a report on a family fun walk organised by Brentwood District Council to publicise a new nature trail in Hartswood. Includes interviews with one of the organisers named Sally Anne and with local press photographer Peter Elgar (3 minutes 17 seconds).
3) "Superstitions" - an item discussing the origins of some supestitious beliefs. Includes contributions from Essex authors Jessie Payne and Eric Maple talking about Friday the 13th, walking under ladders, and touching wood, as well as the story of the devil's handprint at the church of St. Mary's, Runwell (5 minutes 53 seconds).
4) "Tilbury Ferry" - a report on the possible closure of the Tilbury to Gravesend ferry across the Thames. Includes an interview with Lynn Ballard of Essex County Council's Tourism Department which is looking at ways to increase the use of the ferry for leisure and tourism. Also includes interviews with the Ferry Captain, Alf Gates, and with Eileen Gregory, a passenger (9 minutes 10 seconds) (listen above).
5) "Farm Quiz" - a report on an event at Retreat Farm, Little Baddow, organised by the Ministry of Agriculture's Development and Advisory Service in association with Essex Young Farmers and Union Hunt to highlight countryside and conservation issues. Recorded 31 May 1987 (4 minutes 38 seconds) (listen to clips above).
