On plate XXI, scale bar ‘Statute Miles 69½ to a degree / 4 miles’ [= 199 mm.] [c.1:32,000 or 2 inches to 1 mile (1:31,680)]

Very detailed map, the largest of the county at that date, with individual houses shown in countryside plus all roads and most tracks. In south east corner of index map, cartouche, hanging over a tree in front of a fulling mill; in north east corner, map of Harwich harbour, and to the west of that a map of Colchester.

The sheets are bound on their left edges, instead of in the centre. Only left hand half of frontispiece sheet present, but all other sheets in good condition. Pagination: XXV (half), index map, I-XXIV.

Admin History:
Chapman and André’s map was published in 1777 as both a 25-sheet atlas as here and as a wall map. It was re-published by Keymer of Colchester in 1785, and by Chalk, Meggy and Chalk of Chelmsford in 1833.

This copy has a plain ?early 20th-century binding by 'Chas. W. Poole & Sons, (established 1885), bookbinders ... 21 Market Place, Chelmsford' (label inside front cover). The telephone number given here, Chelmsford 1092, was current in 1936 (telephone directory) but not in 1937 (Kelly's Directory of Essex).
Physical Characteristics:
Plain covered boards in poor condition, with much edge damage to sheets, some repaired.
