The first part of an interview with Mike Karslake, born in Willesden in 1932, educated at St. Clement Dane's School.

Side One: Memories of evacuation and return to London; childhood games - ARP cards, scooter and pram wheel cart; influence of grandfather, memories of air raids; boy scouts in wartime - incident when V1 hit a bus; school trip to Wormwood Scrubs prison; further memories of air raids and impromptu concert in Underground; family games in evenings; keen model maker, no kits; story about German toy car; went to art school and studied engineering at evening classes.

Side Two: Description of early career from LCC [London County Council] Architects Department in 1948 making Festival of Britain models; National Service making topographical models; other jobs; marriage and appointment in Architects Department of Basildon Development Corporation 1954; conflict with Deputy Architect, style of local government at that time; description of Basildon in early 1950s, squatters, beauty of area; rent, rates and salary, cost of motor scooter etc; description of current house; comments on the younger generation; started up own business in 1956 - costs and income in first year.
