MICROFICHE OF DEEDS OF A PROPERTY IN MOULSHAM STREET, CHELMSFORD
Scope and Content:
Lease for one year to precede release [lacking].

Daniel Alger gentleman of Great Waltham to Frances Shippee widow of Moulsham.

Two messuages or tenements in Moulsham [Chelmsford] abutting to east on the yard of the messuage formerly called the Katharine ('Katherine') Wheel and now called the Cross Keys [Inn], to west on highway from Moulsham to London [Moulsham Street], to north on a little tenement adjoining the Cross Keys, and to south on 'the corner house' formerly called the Nags Head but now called the White Hart [Inn], occupied formerly by John Little and Richard Britton, afterwards by James Shippee and Thomas Cooke, and now by said Frances Shippee and William Stokes.

[According to Hilda Grieve The Sleepers and the Shadows. Chelmsford: a town, its people, and its past volume 2 (E.R.O. 1994) p.108 the Katharine Wheel took over the sign of the Cross Keys after its original holder - on the opposite side of Moulsham Street - was converted into a gaol in 1665-1666. Grieve does not suggest a date for the transfer of the sign.]

Signed and sealed by Daniel Alger; seal of classical head in right profile.

Parchment; one membrane.
