Scope and Content:
Radio programme items created by Dennis Rookard for the British Forces Broadcasting Service, the British Tourist Authority, the BBC and the North Thames Regional Health Authority, 1979:
1) "Foot Care" - location interview with F.X. presented as a mini feature about a pilot scheme aimed at school children in East London to make them aware of the importance of foot care. Speakers include 15 year old Debbie Hudson and Judith Kemp, Senior Chiropodist at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in London. This recording was provided copyright-free from the North East Thames Regional Health Authority (5 minutes 52 seconds).
2) "Handwoven Silk In Essex" - interview with Richard Humphries, owner of a weaving mill in Castle Hedingham using machinery from the early 1800s to produce hand cut silk velvet. Includes an explanation of the weaving process and talk about public visits to the mill. Recorded 29 July 1979 for BTA (7 minutes 8 seconds) (listen to clips above).
3) "Fastnet Story" - interview with Flight Lieutenant John Labourcome, a Nimrod pilot from 42 Squadron based at RAF St Mawgan in Cornwall, about a rescue mission carried out when a number of yachts involved in the Fastnet yacht race ran into difficulty in the Irish Sea on 13 August 1979. Recorded 15 August 1979 for BFBS (2 minutes 50 seconds).
4) "Nimrod Ground Crew" - interview with Squadron Leader Trevor Wright of the Nimrod Engineering Squadron at RAF St Mawgan about the work of maintaining the Nimrod aircraft of 42 Squadron. Recorded 15 August 1979 for BFBS (3 minutes 5 seconds).
5) "Lifeboat Liaison with RAF" - interview with Wing Commander David Green, Commanding Officer of 42 Squadron based at RAF St Mawgan, about the close co-operation between the squadron and the RNLI lifeboat crew based in Padstow in Cornwall. The interview was recorded at an open day for the Padstow lifeboat where a search and rescue demonstration was carried out. Recorded 18 August 1979 for BFBS (2 minutes 15 seconds).
6) "RAF Mountain Rescue" - interview with Sergeant Terry Heaton based at RAF St Athin about the work of the RAF mountain rescue service. Recorded 15 August 1979 for BFBS (3 minutes 21 seconds).
7) "Radio Telephone Development" - interview with Dr Lew Schnurr of the Chelmer Institute in Chelmsford about his work in developing a new portable radio telephone. Includes discussion of the benefits of the new radio telephone system. Recorded 31 August 1979 for BBC (5 minutes 7 seconds).
8) Further interview with Dr Lew Schnurr. Background for the package above, including details of a pilot project to test the new radio telephone system in Alaska (4 minutes 31 seconds).
