Scope and Content:
Interview with Alan Quaife and Graham Bond, former dentists in Loughton and Buckhurst Hill. The interviewees are sometimes difficult to hear, with some background noise.

Part One
[00:00:] [Alan Quaife, AQ:] Early life; his training in dentistry, studying at Royal Dental Hospital from 1948 to 1952; working at the Royal Dental Hospital; completing his National Service from 1954; work from 1956 as assistant for practice in Stanmore; starting own practice 1 January 1958.
[03:20:] [Graham Bond, GB:] His early life and schooling; training at the London Hospital Dental Institute; working for friend's dental practice in South Chingford for five years; working as associate in Billericay; working in Basildon New Town; starting own practice in 1969 in Hainault; opening additional practice in Buckhurst Hill; also working at Bryant and May industrial practice for factory workers; also working at Bank of England printing works, Debden; his retirement; decision to go into dentistry.
[06:55:] Determination of both to go into dentistry; following clear career path; development of National Health Service (NHS) and levelling dentist's fees; long working hours to compensate for capped fees.
[12:00:] Vast growth in number of patients with introduction of NHS in 1948; large number of extractions done.
[17:10:] Improving dental hygiene from the 1960s; factors behind poor dental hygiene in the 1940s and 1950s; growth and development of preventive dentistry; educating patients.

Part Two

Admin History:
Alan Quaife was born in Scotland in 1930. He moved with his family to [Winnington?], Ilford in 1932/1933. He studied dentistry before serving his National Service in the Royal Air Force. After assisting other dentists, he moved to Loughton in 1958 and set up his own dentistry practice on Debden Estate. He retired in July 1990.

Graham Bond was born in Walthamstow in 1938. He trained at the London Hospital Dental Institute, graduating in 1962. He ran his own dental practice until he retired in 2004, when he sold his dental practice.
